Board meetings and strategic plans from Broken Arrow Public Schools
This document appears to be a transcript from a podcast episode titled "BA Core Values," featuring the Superintendent and two Board of Education members, Dr. Kate Williams and Mr. Steve Allen. The discussion centered on the board members' personal backgrounds, their reasons for moving to or staying in Broken Arrow Public Schools, and what motivates them to serve on the board. Dr. Williams highlighted the unique opportunities offered by the Early College Academy program. Mr. Allen shared his extensive history with the district as a former student, teacher, and coach, emphasizing the positive impact of influential figures on his life and the desire to give back. Both board members expressed strong commitment to maintaining high academic standards and overall excellence within the district, focusing on student and teacher welfare.
The meeting commenced with recognition for National Girls and Women in Sports Day, featuring insights from coaches and staff on empowering female athletes. Following a moment of silence and the Pledge of Allegiance led by a fourth-grade student, the board addressed several recognition items. Creekwood Early Childhood Center was recognized as a Unified Champion School for fostering social inclusion through Special Olympics programming. Recognition was also given to Arrowhead Elementary's music teacher, Christa McKelie, for her exceptional engagement during a student choir performance, including handling a situation where several students were temporarily separated from their parents. Discussions included the approval of previous board meeting minutes, and general updates on district matters.
The meeting commenced with introductory segments, including a feature segment called 'Dining with Dylan' at Lynwood Elementary discussing school food preferences, and a moment of silence led by the Vice President. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by a third-grade student from Spring Creek Elementary. The board approved the minutes from the November 10th meeting. A presentation was given by representatives from the Public School Foundation regarding teacher grants, detailing the funding of 54 grants totaling $31,617.17 for the 2025-2026 school year, noting a significant increase in applications this cycle. Discussions also included the support the foundation provides beyond grants and the need to potentially adjust the grant budget for the next year due to increased interest.
The meeting included discussions and votes on approving board meeting minutes from June 7th, 10th, and 11th. A memorandum of understanding was presented and approved for three teachers related to lottery grants for CTE programs. There was a recommendation and approval for the director of virtual programs and instructional technology. Additionally, the employment of a new early college high school principal was approved. The board also reviewed and discussed graduation rates and strategies for improvement.
The meeting was convened to discuss the district's 2020-2021 re-entry plan, specifically regarding the wearing of masks. The board considered making masks optional for students, staff, and visitors at all school sites, taking into account CDC guidelines, local numbers, and the desire to provide options for parents. There was discussion about whether the CDC recommendation for masks on public transportation constituted a mandate. The board also touched on graduation plans and professional attire for the event.
