North Thurston Public Schools

The North Thurston Public Schools Strategic Plan serves as a roadmap to prepare all students for rewarding careers, fulfilling lives, and compassionate global citizenship. It outlines five key goals for student success, including ensuring early years' success, fostering empowered and resilient learners, developing critical thinkers and solution seekers, promoting continuous growth across all subjects, and preparing students for postsecondary success. These goals are supported by four pillars of professional practice: Standards-aligned, Culturally Responsive Teaching & Learning; Results-focused Professional Learning for All; Safe Climate and Strong Relationships with Students, Families and Community; and Collaboration and High Expectations. The overarching vision is for all students to be empowered and future-ready.

The joint work session focused on several educational initiatives and programs. Key topics included a presentation on the 7th-grade field study regarding tribal government and community values, a curriculum lesson on the Canoe Journey, discussions on consultation grants, and a 4th-grade STEM field study on ecosystems. Additionally, the meeting featured an annual presentation on various federally funded education programs, including Title I, II, III, IV, and VI, which support supplemental educational services, professional development, language support for multilingual learners, and culturally responsive teaching.

The joint work session focused on several educational initiatives and collaborations. Key topics included a sharing session by the Nisqually Tribal Council, an overview of professional development opportunities available to staff, the development of oral storytelling programs, and a discussion regarding the ability for students to earn competency-based credit for participation in tribal activities.

The committee discussed opportunities for participating in a Regional Safety Action Plan, received an overview of ongoing capital projects including updates on the LEAF Center, ADA upgrades at Seven Oaks Elementary, River Ridge High School renovations, and the Timberline High School CTE Annex. Additionally, the committee reviewed a list of future facility needs across the district and outlined a process for capital project prioritization, which involves building condition assessments and subcommittee planning to inform future capital facilities planning.

The board discussed student performances, recognitions for national qualifiers, and items from student advisors. Financial updates were provided, and reports on the Food and Nutrition department and continuous growth goals were reviewed. The board deliberated on personnel actions, contractual service agreements, and required approvals, including ASB, Capital Project, and General Fund agreements, as well as district surplus. Additionally, they reviewed reports on WIAA membership, legislative actions, and updates from various councils including the Thurston Regional Planning Council and the North Thurston Education Foundation.
