Board meetings and strategic plans from City of Canton
The council conducted several public hearings concerning property rezoning, conditional use permits, and annexation requests, including multi-family unit proposals, a religious facility project, and a 167-unit subdivision. A public hearing was also held regarding the Fiscal Year 2027 millage rate. The council discussed the adoption of the millage rate, the potential extension of downtown entertainment district boundaries, an engineering agreement for the Hickory Flat Gateway Project, and the donation of right-of-way land to the Department of Transportation. Additional business included adopting model guidelines for public-private partnerships under the PPFIA and reviewing a request to waive construction fees for a church expansion project.
The meeting centered on updates to the Unified Development Code and the potential reinstatement of a Planning Commission. The council discussed the feasibility of forming a joint board that would combine the Planning Commission with the Board of Appeals to improve efficiency and reduce public confusion regarding multiple public hearings. Staff provided insights on best practices for managing zoning applications and the importance of having appointed boards function as extensions of the elected body. There was a consensus to pursue the establishment of a Planning Commission, with staff directed to develop recommendations for its implementation and timeline.
