The hearing agenda focused on numerous code enforcement cases presented by Alachua County. The New Business section addressed twelve cases involving violations such as accumulation of junk, nuisance overgrowth, unauthorized tree removal, improvement property prior to issuance of a building permit, and parking violations. The Penalty Hearing portion reviewed five cases with determinations of 'Guilty, not in compliance' or 'Guilty, in compliance,' including associated prosecution costs and potential fines. The Alachua County Strategic Guide, adopted by the Board of County Commissioners, outlines Board Level Objectives across ten key focus areas. These areas include Economic Development, Emergency Services, Environment and Conservation, Housing Security, Land Use and Infrastructure, Parks and Public Spaces, Public Health, Social, and Youth Services, Public Safety and Social Justice, Transportation, and Waste Management. The guide aims to promote sustainable growth, enhance community well-being, ensure public safety, and foster environmental stewardship through collaborative efforts and strategic investments.

The public hearing will discuss the imposition of an annual fire assessment for fire services within the unincorporated area of Alachua County and the cities of Alachua, Archer, Hawthorne, Micanopy, and Waldo. The assessment is based on a two-tiered apportionment method, with a portion allocated equally among all parcels and the remaining portion based on the value of structures on each parcel. Hardship assistance is available for qualifying owners who meet certain criteria.

The budget message includes discussion of the FY20 Tentative Budget, property values and millage rates, General Fund, Municipal Services Taxing Unit (MSTU), Municipal Services Benefit Unit (MSBU) & Gas Tax, and County Initiatives and Imperatives.

The Alachua County Board of County Commissioners discussed the FY22 budget. The budget message highlights the importance of strong community partnerships and the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The focus is on assisting those in financial jeopardy due to COVID-19 and working towards community recovery. The County Manager recommends lowering the General Fund property tax millage rate for the fifth consecutive year, while maintaining the same level of programs and services. There are no recommended increases to the MSTU Law Enforcement millage rate, the County's Stormwater Fee, and the Solid Waste Assessment. A modest increase to the Fire Assessment is recommended. The strategic plan is at the forefront, and County staff has weighed available funding and the many competing needs for providing services to the community.
