The 2022-2023 West Las Vegas Schools K-5 Literacy Plan focuses on improving literacy skills for students in grades K-5. Key areas of focus include providing more training on the Wonders ELA Reading program, enhancing interventions (Layers 1, 2, and 3), and increasing the number of reading interventionists. The plan outlines a dyslexia screening plan using the Teach me to Read screener, detailing data analysis, instructional decisions, intervention strategies (including Istation), and communication with families. The core literacy curriculum is HMH Wonders, supported by 90 minutes of daily structured literacy instruction. SMART goals aim to increase phonemic awareness (K-1) and text fluency (2nd grade) by 20% and increase spelling and text fluency (3-5) by 20%, as measured by Istation. The plan details the Multi-Layered System of Support (MLSS) structure for student placement, progress monitoring, and intervention. Professional development for teachers will focus on Structured Literacy (SL) and the Science of Reading (SoR) through LETRS training. Ongoing monitoring and support will be provided through PLCs, walkthroughs, and coaching.
