Waynesboro Public Schools

This document outlines a four-year statewide strategy, facilitated by The Hunt Institute, to support Virginia's Science of Reading Implementation for English Learners. The strategy aims to increase English Learner achievement and graduation rates by engaging 25 to 30 school leadership teams in developing and executing action plans. Key focus areas include identifying and addressing root causes for EL underperformance, developing inclusionary instructional practices with high-quality materials, implementing best practices in EL instructional services, providing professional learning for achievement gaps, aligning funding to research-based strategies, and fostering equitable and effective literacy environments.

The 2016-2021 Strategic Plan for Waynesboro Public Schools focuses on providing a quality education that includes strong academics, comprehensive programs preparing students for productive citizenship, quality learning environments and facilities, a diverse and highly trained staff, and strong partnerships with parents and the community. The vision is to develop globally minded students who can communicate, collaborate, and empathize; access, evaluate, and utilize knowledge from various sources; present themselves respectfully; succeed in any learning environment; and be initiative-taking, creative problem-solvers. Strategic priorities include career and college readiness, informed and responsible citizenship, strengthening the WPS brand through community relationships, and modernizing and securing school facilities. Long-term goals involve establishing career plans in middle school, partnering with community organizations for job exploration and mentorship, increasing student engagement through the Virginia Tiered System of Supports, ensuring all students graduate with appropriate diplomas and school accreditation, and renovating or constructing Waynesboro High, Wenonah Elementary, and Berkeley Glenn Elementary Schools.
