This document presents the nineteen final recommendations from the City of Prince George Select Committee on Poverty Reduction for Council consideration. Developed between November 2019 and October 2020, these recommendations aim to guide municipal action and advocacy at the local level. They are structured around six key focus areas: Stigma & Discrimination, Housing (suitability & affordability), Access to Services & Supports, Food Security, Education & Employment, and Transportation. The recommendations were prioritized through a community engagement process and address the full spectrum of poverty, aligning with the provincial TogetherBC strategy which targets poverty reduction by 2024.
The council received a presentation from the Downtown Business Improvement Association regarding their clean and safe programs, advocacy efforts, and community events such as Summerfest. Key discussion topics included the effectiveness of the security camera pilot program, the successful implementation of the bike valet service, and ongoing beautification projects. The meeting also addressed financial matters and strategic collaboration with community organizations and government partners to improve downtown conditions.
The Council reviewed and approved several initiatives including financial support for the 2026 Canadian Native Fastball Championships and a capital addition for a District Energy System connection. Key discussions involved submitting various resolutions to the 2026 NCLGA AGM, adopting an updated Whistleblower Policy, and authorizing loan bylaws for equipment financing, stormwater system renewal, building envelope renewal at the CN Centre, cemetery expansion, and civic facility roof replacements. The Council also amended the 2026 meeting calendar, supported a petition regarding public safety, granted final reading to a zoning amendment, and expressed support for a grant application by the Prince George Farmers' Market Association.
The council discussed a residential development proposal and its potential impacts, focusing primarily on traffic management and infrastructure. Key discussion topics included traffic flow concerns in the neighborhood, the intersection design involving 22nd Avenue and Griffith frontage road, sewer and water capacity assessments, and the developer's responsibility for infrastructure upgrades. Council members also deliberated on the procedural requirements for the development application, including public hearing restrictions and the use of section 219 covenants to ensure ongoing traffic impact monitoring during future development phases.
