SPECTRA will identify and act on autism trajectories, the evolving developmental paths individuals follow across the lifespan from the prenatal period through aging, spanning autism characteristics, co-occurring conditions, and functional outcomes together with the genetic, biological, behavioral, iatrogenic (medical influences), environmental factors and their nonlinear interactions. Rather than examining these factors in isolation, SPECTRA will examine how they combine and interact, including their nonlinear interactions, to produce autism and its co-occurring conditions over time. Because different trajectories arise from different combinations of biomarkers and factors,
SPECTRA encourages examining them in combination, whether assembled within one team or through partnership. By resolving these trajectories, SPECTRA aims to move autism care from one-
size-fits-all management to biologically and behaviorally informed intervention: to explain not only what a person experiences but why, to enable earlier identification of autism and co-occurring
conditions, and to guide personalized support and treatment that reduce the impact of co-occurring conditions and improve quality of life across every life stage. Understanding how these
factors converge also opens opportunities to intervene before the most disabling features take hold. Where a modifiable combination of influences drives a trajectory toward regression, medical
crisis, or profound impairment, resolving it early could reduce the severity of these outcomes and, in some cases, prevent them. See attached file.
