High-Purity Germanium RFP

Description: The purpose of this acquisition is to obtain a well-geometry HPGe spectrometer capable of high-efficiency, low-background gamma assay of small sample masses (nominally 1 to 10 g) over an energy range of approx. 40 keV to 2000 keV, with sufficient sensitivity to quantify environmentally relevant, low-activity radionuclides at the levels encountered in coastal and open-ocean sediments and particulate matter. Well geometry is required to obtain near-4-pi counting geometry for limited sample quantities, and heavy low-background shielding is required to achieve minimum detectable activities suitable for geochronology and export flux applications.
