Board meetings and strategic plans from State Specialty Schools Ii- Brookhaven Innovation Academy
The committee discussed significant concerns regarding the school's cash position, which is lower than the previous year, prompting an immediate temporary pause on all non-essential expenditures. An analysis of financial statements revealed that year-to-date operating expenses have increased, driven primarily by rising costs in salaries, benefits, and purchased services, particularly within special education. The committee identified accounting and budget-integration issues stemming from a recent software transition. To address these challenges, the committee agreed to reinstate budget controls, utilize an outside consultant to validate the budget and reconcile records, and pause the approval of new purchase orders until the financial issues are resolved. Additionally, the planned adoption of the amended FY2026 budget and proposed FY2027 budget was postponed.
The committee reviewed the school's financial performance against Charter Performance Framework benchmarks, noting a strong fiscal position. Financial statements for December and January were discussed, highlighting account balances, personnel costs as a driver of budget variance, and cash flow projections. Discussion topics included an update on bond compliance, the ongoing development of the FY26 budget amendment reflecting revised revenue and expenditure projections, and a resolution regarding payroll reporting challenges. The committee also examined trends in cash reserves and planned adjustments to local revenue expectations.
The Head of School reported on the school's performance and preparations for Milestones testing. Finance reports were reviewed, including monthly projections and the upcoming budget process. Discussion took place regarding teacher contracts for the next school year. The board reviewed safety assessment findings, which included potential security enhancements like intrusion film, camera updates, and maintenance of locked doors. Additionally, the school decided to terminate the current cleaning vendor and transition back to a previous service provider due to cost and performance concerns.
