Somers Central School District

The board conducted a reorganization meeting which included the administration of oaths of office to board members and the election of the board president and vice president. The board approved several organizational resolutions for the upcoming school year, including the appointment of district officers, adoption of the budget revision and policy manual, and setting of the meeting schedule. Further, committees were reconstituted for audit, citizen finance, policy, and communications to facilitate board business. Additional actions included the authorization of contract amounts for the superintendent and the designation of official district newspapers and hearing officers.

The board meeting opened with a moment of silence in mourning for a long-serving former board member. The primary portion of the meeting was dedicated to Tusker Pride celebrations, where spring sports achievements were recognized. Coaches provided updates on the performance and accomplishments of the Pioneer League, girls softball, girls lacrosse, boys lacrosse, girls spring track, boys spring track, varsity baseball, flag football, varsity tennis, and varsity golf programs. Several student athletes were also recognized for receiving Academic All-American honors.

The Somers Central School District's Instructional Technology Plan integrates technology into teaching and learning to foster academic excellence and prepare students for a global society. The plan focuses on three key areas: leveraging a student learning data warehouse to enhance data-driven instruction and improve student outcomes, continuously enhancing a secure and resilient network infrastructure, and providing ongoing professional learning for staff in effective technology integration. The vision is to develop confident, thoughtful, and responsible technology users equipped with critical 21st-century skills and reliable access to essential resources.

The presentation focused on a proposed change to the grading system at Somers High School, transitioning from a 100-point scale to an A through F letter grading system. The discussion covered the mathematical rationale for the change, the use of a weighted GPA, the impact on student transcripts, and the goal of fostering a focus on learning mastery rather than point fixation. The presenters clarified that accountability measures, such as failing grades, will remain, and addressed questions regarding how individual assignments will be handled and how the new system aligns with existing grading frameworks like IB and AP.

The board meeting centered on recognizing outstanding student and faculty achievements, including the presentation of the Student of Distinction award, recognizing a historic first-place win at the International Science and Engineering Fair, and honoring the district's valedictorian and salutatorian. Furthermore, the meeting included the formal recognition and awarding of tenure to several faculty members and staff.
