The Rhode Island Department of Health's Strategic Plan is designed to prevent disease and protect the health and safety of all Rhode Islanders, striving for safe and healthy lives within safe and healthy communities. Guided by science-based decision-making, health opportunity, and collaboration, the plan focuses on four strategic priorities: addressing leading causes of injury, illness, and premature death across the lifespan; reducing health disparities; licensing and regulating to promote health and wellness; and modernizing and bolstering public health infrastructure. This document outlines the State of Rhode Island's preparation for the federal Rural Health Transformation Program (RHTP), a $50 billion initiative designed to improve rural healthcare across all fifty states. The state plans to develop a comprehensive Rural Health Transformation Plan to secure funding and guide investments. Key strategic areas include improving access to hospitals and other providers, enhancing healthcare outcomes for rural residents, prioritizing new and emerging technologies for prevention and chronic disease management, fostering strategic partnerships, recruiting and retaining clinicians, ensuring the long-term financial solvency of rural hospitals, and identifying causes of hospital closures.
