Orleans Parish School Board

The Board focused on several policy amendments regarding medication administration, authorized signatures, school admission, dangerous weapons, building security, student dress code, board officers, and pregnant students. Additionally, they addressed a donation from the NFL Foundation, fiscal revenue allocations, leveraged financing for Booker T. Washington High School, capital project amendments, and the acceptance of a land deed. The board also authorized the General Counsel to seek an Attorney General opinion on accrued sick leave liability and addressed construction litigation during an executive session.

The meeting included recognition of high-performing schools, student advisory council updates, and a presentation by the New Orleans Children and Youth Planning Board. The Board conducted elections for President and Vice President, authorized signatories, and approved amendments to several policies regarding school searches, student dress codes, emergency management, computer access, and behavioral health services. Additionally, the Board awarded various contracts for risk and program management services, granted a charter extension, adjusted capital and general fund budgets, accepted donations, and addressed legal and personnel matters during an executive session.

The committee focused on several policy matters, including the second reading and forwarding to the full board for approval of new policies regarding construction project acceptance, liquidated damages, and a facility preservation program. Additionally, revisions to policy sections J, K, and L were reviewed and forwarded for further consideration, with public hearings scheduled for each item.

The Board discussed superintendent remarks, including awards, donations, and educational initiatives. The meeting addressed a consent agenda containing various donations, infrastructure repair projects funded by revolving loans, and bid awards for facility maintenance and supplies. Key action items included the approval of school board member training requirements and the FY2025 budget amendments. An executive session was held to review status reports on construction and injunctive relief litigation, as well as to grant settlement authority for a legal matter involving the Better Choice Foundation.

The committee convened to discuss legal matters in an executive session, including settlement recommendations for the case of Melinda Taylor-Meyers, et al. v. Orleans Parish School Board, et al., and class action litigation regarding property in the case of Doretha Walker, et al. v. AMID/Metro Partnership, LLC, et al. Additionally, the committee engaged in a discussion regarding the character, professional competence, and health of school board-appointed personnel.
