Board meetings and strategic plans from Shane Anderson's organization
The committee held a meeting to discuss operating procedures and the book acquisition and weeding process. The committee officially approved the operating procedures and recommended them to the Board. Discussions also focused on the challenges of addressing a list of 536 books identified as potentially sexually explicit and the need to establish a system for reviewing and vetting books for school libraries following changes in law.
The meeting included a public comment session where citizens expressed concerns regarding student access to age-inappropriate materials and library collection standards. The board discussed and approved a large list of new book acquisitions for libraries across various campuses, noting that the volume was high due to efforts to stock new vending machines. Additionally, the board addressed the process for handling challenged books, reaching a consensus to respect previous review recommendations while considering the context of book series.
The committee meeting focused on procedural discussions regarding book challenges in school libraries. Key discussion topics included citizen comments on the role of librarians and the selection of materials, as well as refining the challenge procedure phases. The committee reviewed the process for weeding books with minimal circulation, determining whether such books should proceed to committee review. Additionally, the discussion covered the inclusion of librarians as non-voting members of a challenge subcommittee to assist in reviewing challenged books.
The meeting commenced with an invocation and pledges, followed by recognition of guests, including youth pastor Zach Inos. Key agenda items involved the recognition of high-achieving students. Executive Director Cesar Deleon presented state-qualifying Mariachi groups from Coronado High School and Lubbock High School for their performances at the 2026 UIL West Texas region contest and the subsequent state festival. Eighteen students were also recognized for qualifying for the HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) state competition in various health-related fields. Furthermore, the meeting honored numerous student qualifiers for the 2026 UIL State Swimming and Diving Meet from Talkington School for Young Women Leaders, Coronado High School, and Lubbock High School, including Gunnar Hansen, who set an all-time state record in the 100-yard breaststroke. The athletics director, Mike Meeks, recognized state qualifiers for wrestling, including Enrique Diosis who earned All-State honors, and highlighted the Lubbock High School boys' team winning the Class 5A state dual championship. Recognition was also given to state qualifiers in swimming and diving.
The meeting commenced with an invocation and pledges. A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to the acknowledgement of January as School Board Recognition Month, featuring remarks from the Mayor of Lubbock and a video presentation highlighting the trustees' dedication to students and the community. Public comments focused heavily on an ongoing personnel matter concerning Coach Tamar Courtourtney of Estacado High School, with several speakers urging the Board not to terminate his contract and demanding consistency in how disciplinary actions are handled across the district. Another major discussion point raised by the public was the district's optimization plan, with concerns expressed that decisions might disproportionately affect the East Lubbock area, emphasizing the need for responsible stewardship of resources.
