The Select Board hosted a community forum to present a new proposal for the replacement of Fire Station One. Key discussion topics included the urgent need for a new station due to structural deficiencies and the lack of modern decontamination facilities, the selection of the former Deerfield School site for the new facility, and the project's revised scope and design efficiency. The board outlined the architectural approach, which includes a dedicated decontamination corridor and space for fleet maintenance, and discussed the funding strategy involving debt exclusion and available town funds to minimize taxpayer impact.
The committee reviewed the project scope and total budget for the Fire Station 1 replacement, focusing on cost reconciliation between estimators and comprehensive site planning. Key discussion topics included the proposed site layout, which features apparatus bays, public parking, field renovations, and drainage improvements. The committee evaluated the construction budget, including owner's contingency and equipment costs, and discussed strategies for managing escalating market costs, competitive bidding, and the necessity for future cost estimation checkpoints. The meeting also addressed the building's readiness for solar power installation.
The meeting covered updates regarding pandemic-related public meeting authorizations, the FS1 capital project including upcoming community forums, long-range financial planning efforts for the Thurston Middle School building, and scheduling for board and committee conflict of interest training. A significant portion of the session focused on a review of Flock camera technology, specifically automated license plate readers, discussing their use for public safety investigations, privacy concerns, and debates regarding the reliability of the vendor.
