Board meetings and strategic plans from Kayla Fulmer's organization
The Economic Development Strategic Plan for the City of Apache Junction serves as a guide for the department of Economic Development over the next three to five years. The plan identifies four target sectors: Manufacturing (with a focus on Electronic Equipment and Components, and Electric and Autonomous Vehicles), Distribution/Logistics, Retail, and Hospitality, Entertainment, and Tourism. The strategic priorities include business recruitment/expansion, workforce development, livability enhancements (downtown development, housing development/redevelopment, and improving public education), and tourism development. The plan aims to capitalize on the city's opportunities for growth, address challenges such as an aging population and limited land ownership, and change the perception of the community to establish it as a business and recreational tourism hub.
The council meeting included an introduction and discussion with the city's newly hired Economic Development Director. A public hearing and consideration of Ordinance No. 1563, a text amendment to the city code, was held. Another public hearing involved Resolution No. 25-01, declaring a document as a public record. Direction was given to staff to take action to change the mayoral term from two years to four years. The meeting also included regional intergovernmental updates, the city manager's report, and announcements of current events, including Lost Dutchman Days.
The meeting covered various topics including the welcome of new Library Board members, the election of officers, the librarian's report, and old and new business. The librarian's report highlighted program attendance, events such as the Library Card Signup Month and a Mars Rover event, and upcoming restroom renovations. Discussion also included staff development plans, a proposed outdoor reading garden, and the upcoming creation of a new strategic plan with a new mission and vision statement.
The Apache Junction City Council held a special meeting to discuss and approve several agenda items. Key topics included the tentative budget for Fiscal Year 2024-2025, the City's Civilian and Sworn Compensation Plans for Fiscal Year 2024-2025, and the Public Safety Personnel Retirement System (PSPRS) Pension Funding Policy. A public hearing was held for each of these items. Additionally, a work session was held to discuss a proposed public art mural for a new multifamily development. The council also reviewed Health and Human Services funding recommendations.
The Parks and Recreation Commission meeting included presentations and updates on various projects and opportunities, upcoming events and activities, the current aquatics season, the fiscal year 2024/2025 budget, updates to the Parks and Recreation Strategic Plan, and invasive plants projects. Discussion also covered improvements to the dog park, design of a pickleball court at Prospector Park, Ada and drainage improvements at SSP, and a modular restroom building at SSP. A conceptual design for the Superstition Basin retention basin was presented, along with an update on the Painted Sky Park, including the ribbon-cutting and grand opening dates.
