The commission recommended that the City Council maintain funding for American Gateways at $750,000 for the upcoming fiscal year. The discussion emphasized the organization's critical role in providing immigration legal services to vulnerable populations, including Black immigrants, and addressed the high volume of service requests, which currently exceed 100 per week. The commission noted that the funding is essential for preserving the organization's pro se support model and educational programs, aligning with the commission's mission to advance racial equity in the community.
