Channel-Port Aux Basques

This document outlines a strategic economic plan for the Town of Channel-Port aux Basques, developed in 2008 and unveiled in September 2009. The plan, which is designed to steer economic and business development for five years, is based on extensive consultations with the business community, governmental resources, and residents, alongside worldwide research. It aims to guide the economic future of the community, with elements already being implemented by the Town and community stakeholders.

The Strategic Economic Development Plan for the Town of Channel-Port aux Basques focuses on promoting growth and diversification within the local economy. Key areas of focus include harbor development, natural resources, health services, tourism, social development, education, and business development. The plan aims to identify potential economic development opportunities that will provide stability and enhance the prosperity of the community. Targeted outcomes include increasing transportation capacity, attracting new industries, expanding tourism, and improving social services to support the community's long-term sustainability and growth.

The municipal plan for the Town of Channel-Port Aux Basques focuses on orderly growth and development, environmental protection, and meeting the housing needs of the town. It aims to encourage economic activities, manage municipal services effectively, and promote transparency and accountability. The plan addresses land use concerns, including growth management, environmental protection, housing, employment, and recreational facilities. It also considers transportation, municipal services, and financial resources.

The meeting included presentations of awards for outstanding years of service to former council members. Discussions covered lighting on Grand Bay West Causeway, an invoice for alleged damages, and a proposal for land in the Industrial Park for "Love of Paws." Updates were given on Grand Bay West Gabion Cages installation, the Historical Museum/Train Site, and the Fire Department's Cookie Campaign. The council addressed the rainstorm and Trans Canada Highway, correspondence including a request for a memory bench, updates on the Fixed Link, a water issue, donation requests, a review of the town's storm water system, the Municipal Emergency Management Plan, and garbage collection issues. The Public Works Committee Report was reviewed, and new business included discussions on fireworks, Grand Bay West Beach, and the Civic Holiday. A motion to borrow was approved, and the Community Sustainability Plan was reviewed. The council also discussed the storm and the need for amour stone at the old dumpsite.

The Integrated Community Sustainability Plan (ICSP) for Channel-Port aux Basques aims to enable the community to become more sustainable and liveable for present and future generations. It emphasizes the sustainability aspects of physical, social, and economic development, focusing on environmental, economic, social, cultural, and governance pillars. Key goals include economic growth and diversification, ensuring clean and potable water, preserving local cultural heritage, strong government leadership, mitigating environmental impact, and sound financial management. The plan involves various action plans and partnerships to address these goals, promoting community development while operating within the financial parameters of the present tax base.
