TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER OPPORTUNITY: Supersonic Spike Diffuser (SSC-TOPS-10)

Description: NASA invites companies to apply for exclusive or nonexclusive license rights to commercialize, manufacture, and market the Supersonic Spike Diffuser, and states that no funding accompanies the potential licenses. Developed at NASA Stennis, the spike diffuser is designed to provide approximately twice the pumping performance of second-throat diffusers while enabling lower vacuum pressures for a given feed pressure and mass flow. Technology Transfer Opportunity: Supersonic Spike Diffuser (ssc-tops-10)
Standard cylindrical and second-throat diffusers allow supersonic gas flows to expand within their walls and pull a vacuum on any upstream void. However, the high-Mach-number shock reflections that occur in the center of the plume create substantial losses and result in an inefficient pumping process. Centerbody diffuser designs provide an improvement by reducing the maximum Mach number of the core flow, but also increase the number of oblique shocks in the system by introducing multiple turns into the system. A new type of spike diffuser recently developed by NASA Stennis Space Center is able to provide approximately double the pumping performance of second-throat diffusers via Pareto-efficient reduction of both core Mach number and flow deflection. This enables substantially lower vacuum pressures to be achieved for a given feed pressure/mass flow via the use of higher-expansion-ratio driving nozzles. Spike diffusers are also spatially compact, requiring only ~25% of the length of second-throat designs.

NASA’s Technology Transfer Program seeks inquiries from companies interested in obtaining rights to commercialize, manufacture, and market its portable microscope technology. NASA Johnson Space Center developed the handheld digital microscope for in-situ health monitoring in space, and it may also serve applications on Earth. The technology is at TRL 8 and available to license; NASA does not manufacture products for commercial sale.

Technology Transfer Opportunity: Portable Microscope (MSC-TOPS-131) RFP
Developed a handheld digital microscope to fill the critical microscopy needs of human space exploration by providing flight crews in situ hematological diagnostic and tracking ability to assess and monitor crew health in the absence of gravity. Although currently in use aboard the international space station (iss) to work in conjunction with nasa’s handheld slide staining system, the microscope may have numerous applications here on earth. The microscope is entirely self-contained, and includes optics, illumination, high-resolution imaging hardware, wireless enabled single board computer with scalable power and memory, and rechargeable battery. The microscope also acts as an internet access point and connects via bluetooth to smart devices for wireless image transfer and remote control. The microscope is durable enough to support field use while providing submicron imaging that would typically necessitate the use of larger more expensive benchtop microscopes. Cost of manufacturing the microscope may be relatively inexpensive through the utilization of 3d-printed components, and cots hardware such as interchangeable microscope objectives. The handheld digital microscope is at technology readiness level (trl) 8 (actual system completed and "flight qualified" through test and demonstration), and is now available to license. Nasa does not manufacture products for commercial sale.
