Technology Transfer Opportunity: 3D Lidar for Autonomous Landing Site Selection (GSC-TOPS-353) RFP
Next generation autonomous planetary exploration missions require advanced sensing capabilities for choosing proper landing areas for the vehicles. Current tools do not have the capability to allow vehicles outside the range of terrestrial control to autonomously perform safe landing operations. The Ocellus 3D lidar developed by the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center is a lightweight, small-footprint 3D lidar system for planetary and lunar exploration. The new 3D lidar can perform both altimetry (or range-finding) measurements from high altitudes and, at lower altitudes, terrain mapping and imaging. See outside link.

Technology Transfer Opportunity: Portable Slide Staining System for Microscopy (MSC-TOPS-132) RFP
Developed a handheld slide staining system designed to support medical, research or environmental monitoring. Although deployed aboard the International Space Station to work in conjunction with NASA’s high-powered handheld microscope in the absence of gravity, the system may be applicable to all known staining procedures for terrestrial field and lab microscopes. This novel system is comprised of two primary components which are entirely self-contained when assembled. One component, the dispenser, is designed with an adjustable reagent sponge delivery system that not only serves as a containment unit for fluids, but whose volume allows for multiple uses until the reagents from the dispenser are depleted. The sponges can be replenished with commercial off-the-shelf reagents. The second component, the slide staining device, traps and seals the specimen slide which then receives the titrated reagent from the dispenser. This technology was derived for space-based missions where a specimen’s return to Earth for rapid microscopic analysis would not be viable. A situation could exist within a spacecraft necessitating a rapid in situ medical diagnosis on a crewmember in determining whether an infection is present, conducting a white blood cell count, determining blood platelet concentration, and monitoring the effects of solar particle events as it applies to hematological disturbances.

Technology Transfer Opportunity: Portable Microscope (MSC-TOPS-131) RFP
Developed a handheld digital microscope to fill the critical microscopy needs of human space exploration by providing flight crews in situ hematological diagnostic and tracking ability to assess and monitor crew health in the absence of gravity. Although currently in use aboard the international space station (iss) to work in conjunction with nasa’s handheld slide staining system, the microscope may have numerous applications here on earth. The microscope is entirely self-contained, and includes optics, illumination, high-resolution imaging hardware, wireless enabled single board computer with scalable power and memory, and rechargeable battery. The microscope also acts as an internet access point and connects via bluetooth to smart devices for wireless image transfer and remote control. The microscope is durable enough to support field use while providing submicron imaging that would typically necessitate the use of larger more expensive benchtop microscopes. Cost of manufacturing the microscope may be relatively inexpensive through the utilization of 3d-printed components, and cots hardware such as interchangeable microscope objectives. The handheld digital microscope is at technology readiness level (trl) 8 (actual system completed and "flight qualified" through test and demonstration), and is now available to license. Nasa does not manufacture products for commercial sale.
