Valuate survival of trees planted in urban settings under two different maintenance regimes: maintenance through 2 years post-planting and maintenance through 5 years post-planting. The goal of any urban tree planting or restoration program is healthy trees surviving through maturity; however, there is no consensus in the literature about how much maintenance is needed to maximize survival rates of urban trees at a cost-effective rate. Many studies have found that providing maintenance to trees is most critical during the first five years after they have been planted when mortality rates are highest (Hilbert, et al., 20191), and other studies have shown the benefits of continuing maintenance beyond five years (Lu, et al., 20152, Roman, et al., 20153).
