Remote Sensing Device (RSD) systems utilize infrared or laser‑based technology, high‑speed imaging, radar, and environmental sensors to measure hydrocarbon (HC), carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO₂), and other pollutant levels in a vehicle’s exhaust while the vehicle is in motion. Data collected is used by the DMV as both a regulatory enforcement tool under NRS 482.461 and a research tool under Nevada’s Motor Vehicle Inspection and Maintenance Program (I/M).
