National Tribal Road Maintenance Symposium

The 2nd National Tribal Road Maintenance Symposium, scheduled for May 5-7, 2026, at the Box Elder Events Center in Box Elder, SD, is coordinated by the Northern Tribal Technical Assistance Program (NTTAP), the USDOI Bureau of Indian Affairs Division of Transportation, and the USDOT Federal Highway Administration Tribal Transportation Program, along with professionals from Tribal transportation departments. The symposium provides support for Tribal transportation directors, supervisors, planners, office staff, equipment operators, and project managers. Key topics include successes and challenges in tribal road maintenance, updates from the Bureau of Indian Affairs, management of 93-638 road maintenance contracts, project management, maintenance of gravel roads, updates on signs, striping, delineators, and flagging requirements, soil stabilization, dust control, seal coats, pavement selection and prioritization, bridge inspection and maintenance, data management for reporting, equipment acquisition, and grant writing. The event will also feature an equipment operator rodeo and a vendor exhibition.
