2026 National Soil Moisture Workshop

The 17th annual National Soil Moisture Workshop is scheduled for June 9--10, 2026 with a field trip on June 11, 2026. The event will take place at University of North Carolina at Asheville in Asheville, North Carolina and will be hosted by NOAA's National Integrated Drought Information System (NIDIS) in partnership with the USDA Agricultural Research Service, the USDA Forest Service, and the Cooperative Institute for Satellite Earth System Studies (CISESS). This science meeting is a core component of work conducted by the National Coordinated Soil Moisture Monitoring Network (NCSMMN). The workshop provides opportunities for learning and advancement among researchers, data users, and network operators from the soil moisture community. Activities will include two days of presentations and discussion, followed by a field trip day on natural hazards and soil moisture. There is limited space on the field trip, so please only register for this day if you plan to attend. There will also be an optional pre-workshop meeting on June 8, with a separate registration at a separate location. This year's theme is Soil Moisture and Natural Hazards. Presentations of all kinds may be submitted for consideration, but we especially welcome talks and posters on soil moisture applications for wildfire prediction and management, drought prediction and tracking, flood forecasting and warning systems, landslide prediction, and public health and safety. Abstracts to present at the National Soil Moisture Workshop can be submitted during registration. The deadline for abstracts is March 31, 2026. This workshop will be hosted in a hybrid format, but all presenters must attend in person. There are no conference fees for this workshop. The deadline for registration is April 20, 2026. A workshop agenda will be provided in April, following abstract selection.
