The Board of County Commissioners held a workshop to discuss potential future data center applications and to establish relevant county procedures. Key discussion topics included best practices for addressing community impacts such as noise, water usage, power, emissions, and appearance; regulatory considerations stemming from Senate Bill 484; the evaluation of land development codes and comprehensive plans; and comparisons with the approaches taken by neighboring counties. The Board provided direction to staff to coordinate with utility providers regarding tariffs, to develop a comprehensive plan for future applications, and to explore retaining external expertise to assist in drafting relevant ordinances.
The board conducted a public hearing regarding the adoption of a resolution for a per-parcel unit assessment for the Silver Creek and Silver Creek 1st Addition Road and Drainage Improvement Area. Discussion included the evaluation of bid submissions and the subsequent award of contract 26B-096 to C.W. Roberts Contracting Inc. Public commentary was heard, which included concerns regarding financial hardship and constitutional impacts alongside support for the necessary road improvements. The board ultimately voted unanimously to approve the proposed resolution.
The commission reviewed several zoning and land use requests. Consent agenda items included various zoning changes from agricultural to single-family, business to rural residential, and amendments to an existing planned unit development to adjust dwelling types. Individual agenda items featured a withdrawn special use permit for commercial vehicle parking, as well as split votes on a small-scale land use change and a zoning change for a proposed residential development. The commission approved a special use permit for outdoor vehicle storage and passed an ordinance to impose a temporary moratorium on the acceptance and review of applications for data centers, data processing facilities, and cryptocurrency mining operations.
