Arch Network Bi Monthly Meeting
The meeting featured a presentation on cross-disciplinary perspectives regarding the healthcare needs of older incarcerated adults with functional impairments. Key discussion themes identified from participant interviews included significant gaps in suitable housing options for this population, the high value placed on collaborative care across all professions, and the harmful consequences of existing policies related to order and discipline on older adults. Other topics covered were the lack of formal peer programming (though unofficial peer support is vital), risks to staff related to the responsibility of care, and structural barriers to collaboration with medical departments due to physical separation. There was also discussion regarding confusion over information-sharing protocols (HIPAA), the need for improved screening, assessment, and specialized training, and the vital, yet often uncompensated, role of peers in supporting vulnerable individuals.
