The Southern Regional School District's mission is to provide students with challenging learning opportunities shaped by the New Jersey Student Learning Standards, fostering their development into contributing members of society through a community partnership. The plan focuses on managing financial resources, expanding funding opportunities, and providing comprehensive programs to challenge individuals to achieve personal excellence. It also emphasizes reciprocal communication with the community and collaboration on joint learning ventures, including diversifying interactive programming and enhancing community outreach.

The strategic plan serves as a roadmap for the Southern Regional School District's future, considering its mission, core beliefs, strengths, opportunities, and community needs. The first strategic planning cycle began in 2000, leading to organizational growth. The second cycle commenced with a Strategic Planning Council weekend on January 26 and 27, involving community members who reviewed the previous plan, developed a new mission statement, reaffirmed core beliefs, and identified three broad goal areas with five strategies each. Action Teams will develop action plans for each strategy within their respective goal areas.

The Southern Regional Board of Education invoked the Doctrine of Necessity to ratify a collective bargaining agreement with the Southern Regional Education Association (SREA). Conflicts of interest involving multiple board members due to family employment within the school district or NJEA affiliate membership would have prevented a quorum. The resolution allows the board to proceed with the vote, ensuring compliance with the School Ethics Commission guidelines.
