Committee of the Whole / Council Committee of the Whole / Council Meeting
The meeting began with the approval of the agenda and moved into a closed session regarding the acquisition or disposition of land, litigation, and solicitor-client privilege. Following the closed session, a land acknowledgement statement was read. The primary focus of the meeting was a deputation regarding a proposal to establish a framework for keeping backyard hens, with arguments presented for their benefits to food security, sustainability, and family enrichment. Council members and staff discussed the current zoning bylaws, confirming that keeping backyard chickens is not permitted in urban residential areas and would require a costly, site-specific zoning bylaw amendment.
