The committee discussed operational changes within the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office Civil Division due to significant workload constraints and staffing shortages. Effective July 1, the division will discontinue serving certain civil process items not required by law, instead prioritizing court-mandated services such as domestic violence protection orders. The Sheriff's Office provided information on how the public will be informed of these changes, including website updates and physical signage. It was clarified that individuals requiring non-mandatory process service will now need to utilize private process servers at their own expense.

The panel discussed challenges associated with fireworks enforcement, including staffing limitations and the volume of non-emergency calls. Key topics included strategies for better triaging calls, the role of public education in fire safety, the process for potentially banning fireworks during extreme dry conditions, and coordinating inter-agency messaging. Participants also addressed the impact of fireworks on community safety and the practical difficulties of enforcing regulations given the widespread availability of fireworks.

The council meeting included the issuance of a proclamation designating Memorial Day to honor fallen service members. Discussion topics included the historical relationship between Pierce County and the military, particularly regarding the support for Joint Base Lewis-McChord. The meeting also featured testimony regarding the support for Gold Star families and the advancement of House Bill 2514, which seeks to establish a global war on terror memorial at the state capitol.

The committee is convening a special meeting to address two primary legislative proposals. The first proposal involves repealing the existing Parks and Recreation and Open Space Plan, adopting a new plan, and amending the relevant sections of the Pierce County Code. The second proposal concerns reducing zoning barriers for daycare facilities by adopting specific amendments to the Pierce County Code definitions and development regulations for zoning.
