The board discussed and acted on several closed session items, including the approval of a settlement agreement for a student's private aid and a settlement agreement regarding a classified management employee resignation. Additionally, the board approved the final closing statement for the acquisition of property adjacent to Franklin Elementary School and reviewed a satisfactory performance evaluation for the superintendent for the 25-26 school year. The board also appointed a new special education coordinator, heard reports from the Santa Monica Malibu Classroom Teachers Association (SMMCTA) regarding a parcel tax measure and payroll concerns, and received a report from SEIU regarding bargaining and concerns about a legal firm.

The Personnel Commission reviewed and approved classified personnel eligibility lists and a request for advanced step placement for a new hire in the technical theater coordinator classification. The meeting included reports from the director of classified personnel regarding recruitment activities, personnel requisitions, and merit and non-merit status reports. Additionally, the commission reviewed the 2026-2027 meeting calendar and provided an update on the Board of Education meeting schedule.

The Board approved the LCAP and LCAP Addendum for the 2026-27 period, the budget for 2026-27, the Measure R Annual Plan, budget transfers, and policy updates regarding Student Services. Discussions included a presentation on the CA School Dashboard for SMMSUD, an update on the district's instructional technology landscape, proposed changes to board policies and administrative regulations for the annual employee handbook, and reports from the Early Learning DAC and Special Education DAC.

The Board of Education meeting covered reports out of closed session regarding legal settlements, including reimbursements for private tuition, attorney fees, and independent educational evaluations. The superintendent provided an update on summer operations, professional development, and facility improvements across the district. A study session was conducted on the California School Dashboard local indicators, which included a review of progress in academic standards, parent and family engagement, school climate, and facilities.

The board meeting primarily focused on a discussion regarding artificial turf versus natural grass in school play areas and fields. Multiple community members and students expressed concerns about the safety, temperature, and environmental impact of artificial turf, particularly for younger children in transitional kindergarten and kindergarten programs. Proposals were made to implement a moratorium on new artificial turf installations and to conduct a pilot study for natural grass. Additionally, the board acknowledged the need for further dialogue on these surface alternatives.
