Parkros School District Working Session
The board meeting included a land acknowledgement, recognition of Indigenous People's Day, and the observance of National Principals Month. The primary discussion focused on a presentation from the Queer Student Alliance regarding the difficulties trans and non-binary students face due to the inability to change their asserted names in the school's information system, Synergy, without a costly legal name change. This issue results in deadnaming in email accounts, Google Classroom, and rosters used by substitute teachers. The proposed solutions included moving asserted names to the first name field and creating a committee to formalize a policy. Board members and staff discussed the technical constraints of integrating Synergy with other platforms and confirmed that work is currently in progress to address these issues systemically.
