Michigan Department of Education Vision
This document, presented as a speech titled "With Change Comes Opportunity," addresses the critical educator shortage in special education across Michigan, a challenge exacerbated by the pandemic. It outlines the strategic efforts of a state-legislated task force (the 94D optimize group) and the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) to develop a comprehensive multi-year plan. Key focus areas include attracting, preparing, and retaining a diverse special education workforce through enhanced induction and mentoring, targeted professional development in high-leverage practices, and improving the public perception of the education profession. The overarching aim is to foster a system of continuous improvement, collaboration, and effective support to maximize outcomes for individuals with disabilities in Michigan.
