The Board of Education held a study session and a regular meeting. Topics included updates on the Newcomer ELD model, the implementation of the California Healthy Youth Act, Next Generation Science Standards, and a proposed Incomplete report card mark. The regular meeting addressed contract extensions for Assistant Superintendents, public hearings for the Teachers Association of Paramount agreement and the Local Control Accountability Plan, and the approval of various educational services, including a middle school leadership elective, SAT/PSAT readiness agreements, and curriculum adoption for speech and debate. The Board also reviewed budget adjustments, authorized audit services, and discussed air quality improvements and staffing reports.

The board discussed and took action on several agenda items including personnel appointments for leadership roles such as the Coordinator of Career Technical Education and a school principal. Additionally, the board authorized a resignation agreement, reviewed local indicators for the local control accountability plan, and discussed student safety and connectedness based on survey data. A new study session was scheduled for August, and public comments were received regarding transportation services and an RFP process.

The report details progress across eight state priorities and four local indicators, which include Basic Conditions, Implementation of State Standards, Parent Engagement, and School Climate. It also outlines key activities and new initiatives in place for K-5 and middle school students, such as Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI) Math, AVID expansion, and technology integration.

The board received a comprehensive update regarding the Special Education department, focusing on program advancements and the implementation of Common Core State Standards. Discussion points included the growth and success of the Hollydale Autism Program, the progress of the Emotional Disturbance (ED) program at Buena Vista High School, and the positive impact of co-teaching models across K-12 grade levels, which have contributed to increased graduation rates. Additionally, the presentation covered professional development efforts in English Language Arts and Mathematics, the alignment of instructional materials with new state standards, and the initial data from a co-teaching pilot program in high school science and chemistry courses. Future steps include monitoring existing programs, exploring K-8 ED class expansion, and participating in textbook adoption processes.

The board conducted its statutory meeting to hold its annual election of officers, including the President, Vice President/Clerk, Secretary, and various representative positions. The meeting also addressed regular agenda items, including student and staff reports, professional development, and an instructional technology pilot. Business matters approved included personnel reports, consultant and contract services, student placement in nonpublic schools, and budget adjustments. The board also received reports on sexual health curriculum, facilities, and school attendance. Additionally, a meeting of the Facilities Corporation was convened to confirm officers.
