Board meetings and strategic plans from Joell Boast's organization
The Ellensburg School District's strategic plan outlines commitments to safe, inclusive environments, engaging and rigorous learning, tools for lifelong success, and strong partnerships. These commitments guide four strategic priorities: cultivating early learning, ensuring equity and excellence for all students, prioritizing student health and well-being, and preparing future-ready graduates. The plan aims to develop a 'Portrait of a Graduate' characterized by communication, critical thinking, career readiness, strong character, and active citizenship, ensuring a high-quality education tailored to diverse learning needs within a strong community.
The meeting commenced with introductions and the approval of the consent agenda. A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to the recognition of Tasha Woods as she concluded her service on the board after eight years. The Student Representative provided an update, proposing the creation of a student representative formula or handbook to encompass student voices across all grade levels, from early learning through high school, and to include club activities. Board members discussed the importance of hearing from all students, including those who are typically unheard, and how student voice should integrate with the strategic plan, particularly regarding student well-being and policy input versus procedural matters. Following this, the Teaching and Learning team provided an update, detailing progress on TNL rounds, which involve classroom visits, learning walks, and discussions on school improvement plans, academic progress, and social-emotional behavioral aspects. Over 90 classroom visits have been conducted in the fall.
The board meeting included discussions and presentations from the Ellensburg High School journalism students, who shared their work on the school newspaper and yearbook. They highlighted their efforts to increase student engagement and participation, including using social media and participating in journalism competitions. The board also discussed the school improvement plan for Ellensburg High School, including celebrations, student participation in fall activities, and new course offerings. They reviewed the previous year's goals related to math and English language arts, as well as the sense of belonging among students.
The meeting included updates on the Ellensburg School District's COVID-19 response, focusing on ensuring continued education and support for students and families. Key topics included the provision of school meals, childcare for first responders and health professionals, payroll continuity, and support for seniors. The district is working to provide learning opportunities, address internet access issues, and ensure seniors can meet graduation requirements, including exploring credit waiver options and supporting AP test preparation.
The board discussed the consent agenda, student reports, and curriculum adoption. Student reports covered a visit to Morgan, discussing student recognition, the prowler program, school climate and culture, and discipline and supervision. The board also acknowledged Amari for his service. Curriculum adoption was discussed, including high school English texts, philosophy, science, and social studies.
