This School Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA) aims to maximize resources and minimize duplication to ultimately increase student achievement. The plan focuses on three primary goals: fostering instructional excellence and continuous improvement for student achievement in ELA, Math, and Science, with particular attention to English Learners; enhancing engagement and school climate through community partnerships, increased attendance, parent involvement, and positive behavioral supports including mental health and social-emotional learning; and establishing exceptional learning conditions that promote safety, responsibility, respect, basic services, and equitable access to a broad course of study.

The board meeting included a public comment session regarding longevity recognition, contract negotiations, and staffing concerns. The board recessed into a closed session to discuss public employee dismissal, discipline, release, complaint conferences with legal counsel regarding anticipated litigation, labor negotiations with CSEA and NTA, and public employee employment matters. Upon returning to the regular session, the board discussed board meeting guidelines, student reports on upcoming school events, and organizational updates from the Newark Teachers Association, CSEA, and NUMA, which included concerns about school facility maintenance, budget planning, staffing delays, and general district management.

The meeting focuses on the review of school reports, strategies to increase participation in ELAC and DELAC, and initiatives to encourage the completion of forms for free and reduced-price meals. Additionally, the committee will discuss future meeting planning and recognition of members.

The committee meeting agenda includes presentations regarding Newark Library summer programs, NUSD youth summer programs, and updates on the NUSD bond, property status, and field renovation project. The meeting will also cover an update from the 7-11 Committee, a status report on local ballot measures, and the appointment of a student board member as an advisory member.

The committee discussed the potential appointment of a student board member to the Liaison Committee, ultimately deciding to defer the item for further coordination with the school board and student body. Additionally, the committee received presentations regarding various summer programs offered by the Newark Library, the school district, and city recreation services. Finally, an update was provided on the development of the new Newark Resource Center, which is scheduled for completion in August.
