La Joya Isd School Health Advisory Council Meeting Minutes
The committee reviewed the SHAC purpose and bylaws, presented final findings from the UTRGV STEPS project, and provided an update on the CATCH health and physical education curriculum, noting alignment with TEKS. Extensive discussion was held regarding student health concerns, including the impact of social media, the need for parent education on nutrition and family wellness, and concerns regarding excessive caffeine and sugar consumption from food brought from home. Additionally, district physical education initiatives were highlighted, including new equipment funding, the return of the Learn to Swim program, and the introduction of a new 6th-grade Pre-Athletics course focused on skill development.
