Marion Minor Cook Athenaeum Resolution
The event featured a debate on the resolution: 'This House Should Abolish the Electoral College,' presented in a modified Oxford parliamentary style. The discussion involved esteemed legal scholars and CMC alumni discussing the historical context, practical benefits, and democratic implications of the Electoral College. The affirmative side argued for abolition based on principles of 'one people, one leader,' the administrative role of the President serving the entire country rather than just states, and the military command role. The defense of the Electoral College focused on its origins as a necessary compromise, its practical benefits, and refuting claims that it is inherently undemocratic, citing that faithless electors have not thwarted the popular will.
