Southern Caldwell Optometry Webinar
The webinar focused on student services and resources provided by SCO, featuring discussions led by Avery Cunningham, Dr. Carrie Leibowitz (Director of Academic Support Services), and Dr. Jeanette Pepper (Coordinator for Student Diversity and Inclusion). Key topics included the student-run tutoring program, which is available for any course at any time for free to the student recipient, and resources for managing test anxiety, such as faculty advisors, peer support, and professional counseling services through Concern (Student Assistance Program) and a private counselor. The presentation also detailed support for students with disabilities via ADA accommodations, noting that the criteria may be stricter than undergraduate standards due to preparation for national boards. Furthermore, the discussion covered assisting students in adjusting to life in Memphis through orientation, housing fairs, budgeting support from Financial Aid, and establishing a sense of belonging via small group structures (advisor groups, lab groups, Optics groups) and special interest clubs. Finally, diversity initiatives were addressed, highlighting support for students of color through the National Optometric Student Association, individual check-ins, and cultural events such as Lunar New Year and Black History Month celebrations.
