The board discussed tree protection policies and strategies to address unauthorized clearing of land. The conversation centered on the challenges of enforcing tree removal permits, protecting mature and specimen trees, and the difficulty of retroactive remediation for clear-cutting. Staff clarified that while single-family residential lots are exempt from certain permits, the city is exploring ways to deter developers from clearing property before it is rezoned for commercial use. The board also reviewed the existing enforcement code regarding project buffers and the importance of citizen involvement in reporting potential violations.
