The meeting included a public comment session where community members raised concerns regarding the city's contract with Flock Safety, highlighting issues with automated license plate readers, potential privacy violations, data sharing with federal agencies, and the perceived lack of accountability and reliability of the technology. The independent police auditor presented a proposed change to the process for reviewing and reporting on police use-of-force investigations. This proposed framework aims to categorize recommendations by subject matter and analyze them for recurring patterns and trends over a semi-annual reporting period, rather than reviewing each case individually, while ensuring that cases involving disagreements with police department findings remain a high priority.
The commission discussed the 'Block-Aid' project, which involves painting concrete barriers in Highland Square with playful patterns to deter negative activity and improve the neighborhood's aesthetics. Additional topics included updates on the progress of sculpture installations, ongoing efforts to draft organizational bylaws, and the potential need for a vice-chair position.
The board meeting commenced with the introduction of new members and included a presentation regarding proposed charter amendments concerning board structure, compensation, and member term limits. Following the adoption of a consent agenda for investigative findings, the board engaged in a detailed discussion regarding the establishment of a School Resource Officer (SRO) reform task force. The dialogue centered on the task force's membership criteria, input from community organizations like the NAACP, and specific objectives, including the development of comprehensive reform frameworks, enhanced training standards, and accountability measures intended to be finalized by September 2026.
