The council conducted several closed sessions regarding personnel matters and property disposition. The Planning Department provided briefings on proposed zoning ordinance changes, erosion and sediment control, and updates on the Downtown Plan and the TRAKit permitting system. The council also received a presentation on a Downtown Parking Meter Pilot Program and a police update on 2017 summer patrol and crime statistics. Financial actions included the acceptance of grants for the Summer Food Program and the Southwest Virginia Regional Employment Coalition, as well as the approval of various human services and arts commission funding allocations. Additionally, ordinances were passed regarding dog tethering restrictions, livestock on public roadways, and pedestrian activities on medians.
