The Board of Education meeting focused on celebrating student achievements in arts and athletics. The meeting included recognition of the Bus Driver of the Year and the Buncombe County Schools Teacher of the Year. Furthermore, the Board honored various students for their accomplishments in the North Carolina Band Masters All-State bands, as well as athletes who secured state championships and runner-up titles in track and field, tennis, and volleyball.

The board meeting included a work session on school control measures and staffing shortages, specifically regarding bus drivers and non-certified positions. The board reviewed 2020-2021 school performance data and accountability measures. Actions taken included awarding a contract for custodial services, authorizing a lottery application for stadium and field lighting, passing a resolution opposing proposed changes to the board election process, and maintaining the existing face-covering policy. Additionally, several policies were reviewed, and acknowledgments were made for staff achievements and community partnerships.

The board meeting included a discussion and presentation on the Academically and Intellectually Gifted (AIG) local plan, which is updated every three years to reflect student identification, programming, and accountability standards. The board also held a public comment session where community members addressed topics including school performance, the impact of gender ideology, parental rights, DEI practices, and the policy regarding mandatory school uniforms at Koontz Intermediate.

The board established key criteria for redrawing electoral districts, which include maintaining high school attendance zones, considering incumbent residency, keeping communities of interest like elementary attendance districts together, ensuring contiguity, and utilizing a pie wedge shape configuration for the districts. The board also outlined the next steps for developing and reviewing alternative plan options.
