Board meetings and strategic plans from Beth Brotherton's organization
The GVL 2040 comprehensive plan, originally passed in 2021, focuses on preserving open space, creating affordable housing, and improving transportation and mobility. The plan's 5-year update includes a new element, resiliency, addressing the impacts of flooding on communities and infrastructure. Progress includes preserving 5% of vacant land, approving over 900 affordable housing units, and implementing bike lanes and pedestrian crossings.
The meeting addressed a variance request concerning the rear building setback for expanding a 'Single-unit Living' use. The discussion involved the possibility of reducing the deck size, the Homeowners Association's support for the improvement due to the land being undevelopable, and concerns about setting a precedent for future variance requests. Ultimately, the application was denied. Additionally, staff provided an update on current projects, including the 24-month code update and the status of requests from the last board meeting.
The City Council meeting addressed several key issues. These included accepting contributions and appropriating funds for the construction of a new inclusive playground in Cleveland Park, as well as appropriating funds for the Disaster Assistance Program and sewer rehabilitation efforts. Additionally, the council discussed and approved ordinances related to annexing real properties, rezoning properties for mixed-use development, and amending the Official Zoning Map. The council also appointed Ministerial Recorders and Assistant Municipal Court Judges and approved amendments to an agreement to lease office space. The Greenville City Fire Department's assistance with the forest fires at Table Rock was noted.
The meeting included discussions and recommendations regarding several annexation and rezone applications. These included Highland Homes LLC's application for annexation and rezone at 7 Stall Street, The Neighborhood Housing Corporation of Greenville and Carolina Crafted Construction, LLC's application for annexation and rezone at 307 and 309 Marie Street, and Palmetto Alliance Property Group, LLC's application for a rezone at Augusta Street and Dixon Street. Additionally, Meghan Caldwell's application for a rezone on Landwood Avenue and Kirk Conover's application for a rezone at 430 N. Main Street were discussed. The commission also addressed amending the official zoning map for the City of Greenville and received a staff update on planning projects and initiatives, including the GVL 2040 Comprehensive Plan.
The Greenville Zoo's five-year strategic plan focuses on animal wellbeing, delivering memorable experiences, conservation efforts, education and research, ensuring financial sustainability, and promoting organizational excellence. It includes a master facilities plan to leverage resources and create partnership opportunities to advance the Zoo's mission and enhance the guest experience.
