The committee discussed the upcoming fiscal year budget timeline and the introduction of a new framework called Prioritizing Resources and Initiatives for Strategic Management (PRISM). This framework aims to inventory initiatives and evaluate them using academic return on investment metrics. The evaluation process includes categories such as keeping, expanding, targeting, fixing, replacing, or eliminating programs based on student outcomes and cost-effectiveness. Additionally, plans were reviewed for conducting an initiative inventory and surveying principals to gather feedback on program effectiveness across schools.
The meeting focused on various operational and community topics. Key discussions included the impact of new initiatives on teacher workload and the necessity of time impact analyses. During public comments, concerns were raised regarding classroom sizes and facilities maintenance, the impact of school calendar start dates on student volunteer programs, the environmental and health implications of using synthetic versus natural turf fields, and the need for broader engagement in the board handbook revision process.
The committee established norms and ground rules for participation and elected a new Co-Chairperson. The members also received a presentation on the preliminary community engagement plan regarding the school district's closure and consolidation study, which addresses declining enrollment and excess capacity. Discussions centered on effective outreach strategies and the process for gathering community feedback to inform future school recommendations.
