The Downey Unified School District is implementing a multi-year TK-12 Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) Strategic Plan to expand equitable access to high-quality arts education for all students. The plan focuses on providing consistent, standards-aligned instruction in music, visual arts, dance, and theater, while strengthening connections across elementary, middle, and high school programs. Key components include specialized VAPA teachers, integrated arts instruction, alignment across grade levels, community partnerships, diverse student opportunities, enhanced articulation across grade levels, strategic program investments, ongoing professional learning for staff, and collaborations with arts organizations. Future plans include expanding VAPA staffing, strengthening alignment, increasing districtwide performances, continuing professional development, and pursuing grant funding.

The Board of Education meeting agenda included standard opening procedures such as a call to order, the flag salute, and the invocation. The administrative services session was dedicated to receiving public comments and the approval of the Learning Continuity and Attendance Plan for the 2020-2021 school year.

The board meeting covered a wide range of administrative and instructional items. Key topics included the recognition of various award recipients and staff, approval of numerous service and construction agreements including those related to Measure O Bond funds, and the ratification of various financial and personnel matters. The board also adopted a resolution regarding the sufficiency of instructional materials and a resolution in support of CHARACTER COUNTS! Week. The Board of Education discussed the implementation of the Dual Immersion/International Baccalaureate program and heard a presentation regarding the Shared Values Award. Additionally, the Board appointed a new member to the Citizens Bond Oversight Committee, received various communications and reports from Board members and the Superintendent, and approved several donations, conference attendance requests, contracts, and service agreements.
