The University of Toronto Department of Physics intends to purchase one cryogen-free dilution refrigerator for superconducting quantum-device research. The system should support experiments on superconducting qubits, microwave resonators and related quantum circuits requiring reliable millikelvin operation, high-density microwave and Direct Current (DC) wiring, low vibration, and frequent experimental reconfiguration. Large experimental space and efficient thermal cycling are important because the system will accommodate substantial cryogenic wiring, microwave components, shielding and changing experimental hardware

Seeks innovative approaches to address challenges related to quantum computing. The Quantum Benchmarking Initiative (QBI) aims to examine approaches for constructing a utility-scale fault-tolerant quantum computer and computational workflows that include quantum compute steps. Proposed research should investigate approaches that enable revolutionary advances in design, engineering, test, and evaluation of such systems. Specifically excluded is research that primarily results in evolutionary improvements to the existing state of practice. To rapidly capitalize on new opportunities, DARPA announces the QBI 2026 opportunity, which seeks specific solutions to targeted challenges related to developing utility-scale quantum computers, as defined in specific QBI topic (QBIT) calls. Each QBIT will (1) outline specific details regarding the research topic of interest and (2) provide proposal and submission instructions, including the due date for proposal submission, in addition to those outlined in this PA. Proposals must only be submitted in response to a QBIT.

QBI will use a multi-stage approach to determine viable paths to building a USQC. This process will be divided into Stage A, Stage B, and Stage C, where each new stage represents an increased level of scrutiny into performer-proposed system designs. DARPA is currently soliciting abstracts for Stage A efforts only. Information regarding Stages B and C is provided solely for context on the overall program structure and is not part of the current solicitation under this QBIT. Stage A: Plausibility: The six-month term for Stage A will focus on the performer’s concept for a USQC. It is anticipated that in the first three months, performers will develop a system concept report which will be delivered to the government test and evaluation (T&E) team and reviewed at a concept design review at month four. This report will detail the performer’s approach to building a USQC. In the final three months of Stage A, the T&E team will evaluate and provide feedback on the draft concept report culminating in a presentation of the Government Team’s understanding of the performer’s baseline system architecture, and the performer’s delivery of a final concept report. While six months is the expected Stage A term, milestones may be completed early, allowing DARPA the opportunity to evaluate performers’ concepts ahead of the six-month timeline. See attached file.
