The Department of Energy (DOE) has issued an Expression of Interest (EOI) for the commercial extraction of nickel from radiologically contaminated nickel ingots stored at the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant in Kentucky. This Special Notice, posted on November 21, 2025, with a deadline of February 19, 2026, seeks industry input on operationally mature technologies capable of processing approximately 9,700 tons of contaminated nickel material. The extracted nickel would be processed to meet DOE Order 458.1 authorized release limits, enabling the material to be released for commercial use.
