RLN Summer Series: Addressing Affordable Housing Legislation and Associated Costs

Join NYHC and the Rising Leaders Network for the third installment of our Summer Seminar Series on Thursday, August 27, 2026. This session will explore how local laws impact the cost of developing and operating affordable housing in New York City. Hunter College Master in Urban Policy and Leadership students, in a collaborative project with NYHC, have analyzed local laws that add costs to building and operating housing. The student's report -- How NYC Council Legislation Impacts Affordable Housing- highlights the key trade-offs and areas for reform to better address NYC's affordability crisis. The research team will present their findings followed by a discussion with policy experts and practitioners on potential reforms. The event will start with a presentation from the Hunter College student research team: Elizabeth Barash, Shafrana Carpen, Allison Currier, Raga Maddela, and Jordan Sucher. Following the presentation, we will host a panel discussing the research and the impacts and effects of local laws with housing providers. Panelists will be announced at a later date.
