AFSCME (the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees) is the largest U.S. trade union of public employees, representing roughly 1.3 million state and local government workers across hundreds of occupations (including health care workers, corrections officers, sanitation workers, police, firefighters and childcare providers). The union’s mission is to advocate for fairness in the workplace, excellence in public services, and prosperity and opportunity for working families; it organizes members across state and local government, holds biennial international conventions to set policy, and engages in political advocacy to protect pensions, oppose privatization, and improve wages and benefits.
