About this conference
The Michigan Special Education Legislative Summit (Mi SELS) is hosted by the MAASE Advocacy Committee. This professional learning event will allow attendees to advocate for students with disabilities by building meaningful relationships with state legislators. The two-day event will provide knowledge and skills for advocacy, followed by opportunities to apply those skills in a safe and supportive environment. The first day will cover MAASE's Legislative Platform and Priorities document, an overview of the political landscape, and a panel discussion on current issues. Participants will have an opportunity to practice what they have learned during an evening reception on the first night and legislative office visits on the second day. All activities will be conducted in teams to facilitate learning from more experienced attendees. Advocacy is presented as a foundational leadership skill and a valuable opportunity.
